List of Human Hormones and Their Importance

Hormones; we blame them for an awful lot. When a teenager acts out, "You know how those hormones are!" When a pregnant woman starts crying at a hot dog commercial, we claim, "Don’t mind her, it’s all those hormones." But how many people actually know what the hormones are that they are referring to? Blaming hormones for all of life’s problems has just become a habit instead of something that is really well known.

Some hormones you may have heard of and same may sound like gibberish. The functions of some are relatively easy to understand, while others require a science major. We’ve assembled a list of some of the more commonly known hormones that are responsible for some of the most major functions of the body. It’s about time we got to know the hormones that we place the blame on, and know which one is to blame for what, so that next time your moody teenager talks back, you’ll know the serotonin is to blame.

Melatonin – Think of melatonin as your biological clock. This hormone is responsible for the way you feel throughout the day as far as alertness is concerned. All those drowsy feelings? Blame the melatonin.

Serotonin – This is the one you can blame for PMS and your moody teenager. Serotonin controls your mood, appetite, and your sleep cycles.

Thyroxin – A form of thyroid hormone, thyroxin increases the rate of your metabolism and also affects protein synthesis, which is the process that cells go through to build protein.

Epinephrine – This is one that you have most likely heard of; it’s also called adrenaline. Among a whole list of other things, epinephrine is responsible for what is known as the, "fight or flight" response. This is the hormone that tells you when to fight and when it’s best to run. Some of the bodily responses demonstrated when this hormone kicks in are dilated pupils, increased heart rate, and tensing of the muscles.

Norepinephrine – Also called noradrenaline, this hormone controls the heart and blood pressure. Norepinephrine also contributes to the control of sleep, arousal, and emotions. Obvious effects take place when there is too much or too little of this hormone. Too much gives you an anxious feeling while too little can leave you feeling depressed or sedated.

Dopamine – This controls the heart rate and also assists in perception; deciphering what is real and what is not.

Antimullerian Hormone – An inhibitor for the release of prolactin, the protein responsible mainly for lactation.

Adiponectin – This is a protein hormone, it regulates metabolic processes such as the regulation of glucose.

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone – This assists in synthesizing corticosteroids, which are responsible for stress response, blood electrolyte levels, and other physiologic systems.

Angiotensinogen – Responsible for the narrowing of blood vessels; a process known as vasoconstriction.

Antidiuretic Hormone – This hormone is also known by other names, but it is mainly responsible for retaining water within the kidneys.

Atrial Natriuretic Peptide – A peptide hormone secreted by the cells of the heart and other muscles, it’s mostly involved with the control of water, sodium, potassium, and fat within the body.

Calcitonin – Aids in constructing bone and reducing blood calcium.

Cholecystokinin – Aids in the release of digestive enzymes for the pancreas and acts as an appetite suppressant.

Corticotrophin-Releasing Hormone – Releases cortisol in response to stress.

Erythropoietin – Stimulates the production of erythrocytes, which are blood cells responsible for delivering oxygen.

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone – Stimulates the follicles within the sex organs of both males and females.

Gastrin – Secretes gastric acid.

Ghrelin – Hunger stimulant as well as aiding in the secretion of the growth hormone.

Glucagon – Helps to increase the blood glucose level.

Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone – As its name clearly implies, this hormone releases the growth hormone.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin – Keeps the immune system from attacking a forming embryo during pregnancy.

Growth Hormone – Helps to stimulate growth and the reproduction of cells.

Insulin – Responsible for several anabolic effects, primarily glucose intake.

Insulin-Like Growth Factor – Has the same effects as insulin while also regulating the growth and development of cells.

Leptin – Slows down the appetite while simultaneously speeding up metabolism.

Luteinizing Hormone – Aids ovulation in women and testosterone production in men.

Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone – Produce melanocytes, which are responsible for the pigment in skin and hair.

Orexin – Increases the appetite while also increasing your alertness and energy levels.

Oxytocin – A hormone that plays a major role in reproduction, it aids in orgasm and is also responsible for the release of breast milk.

Parathyroid Hormone – Among other functions, this hormone is mainly responsible for the activation of Vitamin D.

Prolactin – A major contributor in sexual satisfaction and the production of breast milk.
Secretin – Inhibits gastric acid production.

Aldosterone – Mainly responsible for absorbing sodium in the kidneys to increase the volume of blood within the body.

Testosterone – The major male hormone, testosterone is responsible for sex drive, development of the sex organs, and the changes that take place during puberty.

Androstenedione – Essentially estrogen.

Estradiol – In males, this hormone is responsible for preventing what is basically known as cell death of the germ cells. In females, this hormone is in overdrive. Among other things, estradiol accelerates height and metabolism, maintains the blood vessels and skin, aids in water retention, and even aids in hormone-sensitive cancers.

Progesterone – A major contributor to the body’s support of pregnancy.

Lipotropin – Stimulates the production of pigment by aiding in melanin production.

Brain natriuretic peptide – Aids in reducing blood pressure.

Histamine – A hormone based in the stomach, histamine aids in the secreting of gastric acid.

Endothelin – Controls muscle contractions within the stomach.

Enkephalin – Simply a pain regulator.

These are only examples of some of the hormones within the body; there are more complex hormones whose functions are not easily understood. Our bodies (when in proper working order) function like well-oiled machines, and the hormones are a major part of nearly every process. Clearly, hormones are responsible for much more than angry teens, squeaky voices, and weepy pregnant women.

What chemicals released in the brain cause certain moods?

What chemicals released in the brain cause certain moods?

There are many neurotransmitters that induce a combination of bodily, nerve, and mental sensations that we roughly classify as emotions. However, it is not as simple as "produce x to induce y." Everything is a balance. For example, lack of serotonin, or the rapid metabolism of it, can lead to lethargy or depression, but too much of it induces serotonin syndrome which causes tremors, agitation, sweating, and other unpleasant side effects. Acetylcholine modulates learning, memory and general somatic and cognitive arousal; again, too much or too little both lead to a response we would consider negative or unpleasant.

Here's some of the most important neurotransmitters:

Acetylcholine
Dopamine
Serotonin
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine
GABA
Vasopressin
Prolactin and Oxytocin
Various other amines

An individual's brain pathways and structures help determine how these chemicals affect him in a unique way as compared to others. Some of these tendencies are present at birth, but they are shaped over time (particularly in the first two years of life and later in adolescence) by experience. So, no one chemical is responsible for one's mood; it is the interaction of the different levels of neurotransmitters, the action of the receptors they bind to, and a person's past experience of interpreting and reacting to stimuli.

Can you tell the difference between 'than' and 'then'?

Can you tell the difference between 'than' and 'then'? I've noticed SEVERAL people on here who can't!?

Than is used for comparison between two items whereas then is always related to time in one way or another, like then and now.

It's very simple.
You use 'than' for any kind of comparison, and 'then' for everything else.

Than is used in comparisons. Then is a word that indicates time. Examples: I like spaghetti better than lasagna. Diane's house is bigger than the farmhouse. I am going to the museum, then the store.

5 Easy Ways To Get Happier ASAP

It’s in our best interest, both mentally and physically, to make the effort to be happier. Research indicates that happy people are more successful, have more resilience and better coping skills, catch fewer colds, and have a reduced risk of heart disease.
Though I wish it were as simple as slurping up a green juice, making a quinoa salad, and calling it a happy day, it goes much deeper than that. Fortunately, happiness is like a muscle — the more you work it, the stronger it becomes. Here are five ways we can create more happiness in our lives:

1. Decide to be happy.

Happiness doesn’t strike us by luck or happenstance. People who seem to always be happy make a conscious decision to be happy regardless of circumstance. We can choose to grumble over traffic or the weather, or we can take a more positive approach. You might be thinking, “Oh, you’re oversimplifying. It’s not that easy.” It’s not always easy, but it is simple. And the more you practice, the better you’ll get at it.

2. Turn it into a practice.

Take 10 minutes a day to be consciously happy. Think about the blessings in your life. Schedule it into your calendar if you need to! Focus on all the things you have to be grateful for: a roof over your head, a warm bed to sleep in, food in the fridge, loving relationships, sunshine. And spend time every day doing something that brings you happiness — even if it’s something as simple as sitting in solitude with a cup of tea. Let the positive feelings wash over you and bask in them.

3. Give happiness away.

Easy Ways To Get Happier

It’s important to give happiness away, too. In every interaction — with coworkers, grocery store clerks, strangers on the subway — focus on being more kind. Smile, make eye contact, be mindful of your tone of voice and body language. You just might find that when you increase the happiness you offer to others, you’ll receive more of it in return.

4. Be more creative.

Are you unhappy because you feel trapped in mundanity? Stretch yourself out. Try being more creative. If it’s not possible to boost your creativity at work, then practice it in your spare time. Do the creative things that bring you joy, and do them regularly. The world needs the creativity you have to offer.

5. Share a meal with others.

Sharing a meal with friends and family strengthens relationships, improves mental health (especially in teenagers), reduces stress, can reduce children’s risk of substance abuse, and may even get ‘em to eat more veggies. Eating meals with others also boosts happiness! So call your friends and invite them over.
I’m sure you can think of a half dozen things you could do today to improve your physical health, like drink more water or eat spinach. But have you considered what you could be doing to cultivate happiness? I encourage you to ponder this and approach happiness every day with intention.

Dunkirk Movie Review

 CRITIC'S RATING:  4.5/

AVG READERS' RATING: 4.7/5

Dunkirk movie review: Christopher Nolan’s nerve-racking war drama is definitely the best blockbuster of 2017

Dunkirk may or may not be the best war movie ever made, but it is definitely the best blockbuster of the year.

Cast: Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy
Direction: Christopher Nolan
Genre: History
Duration: 1 hour 46 minutes

Dunkirk Story: ‘Dunkirk’ is a World War II film by Christopher Nolan which depicts the story of a French beach and harbour where allied soldiers were caught in a fierce battle, with nowhere to escape.

Dunkirk Review: Christopher Nolan is a director who puts a lot of thought into writing and directing his films. He's a visual storyteller who cares dearly about the narrative structure he painstakingly arranges on the screen while treating his audience with substantial intelligence. For years, he’s broken new ground in cinema by tackling complex concepts with multiple layers that unravel with repeat viewings. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that ‘Dunkirk’ is another Nolan film that will reveal new aspects a second or even third time around.

At the outset, this story is relatively straightforward – almost 4 lakh allied soldiers are stranded on a beach, surrounded by land and being picked off slowly by air bombers. They need to be evacuated by sea, but there aren’t many ships to ferry them off. It’s an absolutely harrowing predicament to be in, and Nolan captures the fear, anxiety, strength and bravery of those involved in equal measure. He does not politicise or glorify the notion of war, instead choosing to portray it for what it is – a complex game of survival, with little room for heroics. What’s astounding is his ability to do so with minimal dialogue. Arguably, any of the actors could be easily replaced and the movie wouldn’t be hampered. Each soldier, officer, pilot, general and captain has his own significant role to play but in the absence of emotional pandering, the entire event itself turns into the lead character.

His decision to completely abstain from CGI, and opting for practical effects instead, makes every gunshot, explosion and dogfight feel extremely real and potent. This is further accentuated by an unnerving musical score by Hans Zimmer that only adds to the nonstop tension. These elements combine to make ‘Dunkirk’ a purely visceral experience, especially in IMAX. While it is not for the average moviegoer – if you’re looking for a fun and mindless action flick there are other options around – it is the first real contender for ‘Best Picture', and a number of other technical awards. If nothing else, it is yet another landmark achievement by one of the most important and skilled storytellers in the present generation of filmmaking.

Creating Your Own Numerology Report in 10 Easy Steps

Creating Your Own Numerology Report in 10 Easy Steps

Having existed for over 2500 years, numerology is gaining popularity today as more and more people are having their numerology report made by psychics online than ever before.

10 Steps in Creating Your Numerology Report

However, if you want to do your own report and not ask a psychic, you can create it on your own in a few simple steps, here’s how:
Creating Your Own Numerology Report in 10 Easy Steps

1. First, let’s start with your Birth Date. Write out your complete birth date that appears on your birth certificate on a piece of paper. This includes the month, day, and full year of your birth.
Numbers derived from your birth date are:
  • Your Life Path number
  • Your Birth Day number
  • Your Challenge numbers (first to fourth and main)
  • Your Pinnacle Cycles (first to fourth)
  • Your Period Cycles (first to third)
  • Your Current Personal Year Cycle
  • Your Expression of Destiny number
  • Your Heart’s Desire
  • Your Personality
2. Translate the birth date into numbers. For example, March 26, 1953 becomes
  • 3 for March; 2,6 for 26; and 1, 9, 5 and 3 for 1953.
3. Add each of the numbers all together. Using the above numbers, it would mean
  • 3 + (2+6=) 8 + (1+9+5+3=18, add the 2 numbers further=1+8=) 9 = 3 +8 +9 = 20
4. Add the final two numbers (the sum) together. So, an equation that has an answer of 20 would result to 2 (2+0). This would be your life path number which is 2.

5. Look at the significance of your life path number at for your birth date. Each number has different traits that are reflected by that number. You can see these traits from looking at numerology number meanings online at an astrology site or buy a book that discusses numerology.
Your Life Path number is at the heart of your being during this life. It describes what you are really like and what is innate and natural for you. It is also the number vibration in which your soul has chosen to ground its life essence. Therefore, the energies present in your Life Path will feed on the opportunities, experiences, and lessons that you attract this life.

6. List down the traits below your calculated life path number.

7. Calculate other numerology numbers that can be derived from your birth date like Expression, Heart’s Desire, and Personality.

To find your Heart’s Desire number:
  • add the numerical value of the vowels of each of your names
  • reduce them to single digits; add the single digits; and reduce them again to a single-digit number, which is your Heart’s Desire number.
To find your Personality number:
  • add the numerical value of the consonants of each of your names in the same manner as described earlier in Heart’s Desire. Do not reduce the Master numbers 11 and 22 when calculating the Personality number
  • The name Thomas has four consonants with the values of 2, 8, 4, and 1, which totals 15. Fifteen reduces to 6.
  • The name Sam has two consonants with a combined numerical value of 5.
  • The name Lim has two consonants, which total 7.
To find your Expression number:
  • write out your full name, and place the appropriate numerical value beneath each letter
  • Add the numbers of your first name, and then reduce it to a single digit. Do the same for your middle and last names.
  • Now, add the three single-digit numbers, and reduce them to another single-digit number to find your Expression number. If you encounter a Master number, 11, 22 or 33, do not reduce it to a single-digit number.
  • The number value of the letters in Thomas totals 22 (Master numbers are not reduced!).
  • The number value of the letters in Sam totals 6.
  • The number value of the letters in Lim totals 7.
  • His full name at birth totals 22+6+7=35.
  • Thomas Lim’s Expression number is 3+5=8
8. Look at the meaning of these numbers. Like your life path, they have different meanings too.

9. List down all the traits that fall on this numbers on your report.

10. Finally, blend the major numerology numbers into one chart. You may add descriptive words that apply.

Feng Shui Numbers: Combining Numerology & Feng Shui

Feng Shui Numbers: Combining Numerology & Feng Shui

Numerology takes on interesting meanings in various parts of the world. In the western world most people consider numerology a product of astrology that will provide tips, hints and insight regarding someone’s personality or behavior. However, people of Asian descent or ancestry view numerology differently. Feng Shui comes into play, and things begin to get very interesting.

Understanding Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an understanding and balance of your environment in order to enhance your chi energy (chi represents all living things). The literal translate of Feng Shui is wind and water, and this art has been practiced for thousands of years.
Sometimes people will move things around a room or space in order for an area to feel more neutral. Feng Shui numerology in Chinese cultures is an important part of selecting phone numbers, addresses, anniversaries and other important numbers.
People who are building homes will often hire a Feng Shui practitioner to help them locate harmonious areas for building. This practitioner evaluates the land and the condition of its chi energy. Once a person decides to build on the land, the principles of Feng Shui are implemented in order not to interrupt the flow of positive energy.

Understanding Feng Shui Numerology

As mentioned above, people of Asian ancestry take Feng Shui numerology very seriously. Certain numbers are considered lucky or unlucky based on the way they sound while being pronounced. For instance, if we were to say “four” aloud in the English language, it would sound or rhyme with the word “more”. Thus, this number would be considered lucky.
Superstition and numerology are deciding factors regarding where to live or work if you’re of Asian descent. People will refuse to purchase a home that is perfect for them because there is a four or 13 in the street address.

Unlucky Numbers

The number four is the worst. When the Cantonese speak the word, which translates as “sei”, it sounds like death. All numbers that can be simplified down to four have a poor representation as well. The numbers 13 and four are considered the worst.

Lucky Numbers

The number eight is considered a very lucky number. Saying the word, which translates as “patt” in Cantonese, sounds a lot like the word “faat”, which stands for prosperity and abundance.

Is There A Solution?

Fortunately, there is a remedy for people who have fallen victim to the ugly and unlucky four or 13. In order to correct the Feng Shui of your home or office, you can circle the number. As simple as it sounds, a circle is meant to enclose the negative effects of these ill-omened numbers.

Thus, a simple solution to fix your numerology Feng Shui is either drawing a circle around the whole number, or you can go to your local home improvement store and purchase a door number that is enclosed in a circle.
If you are a person who believes in the superstitious powers of numerology Feng Shui, and you’ve found the perfect home aside from your street numbers, the above cure should make you feel safe and confident upon moving into your new home.

NUMEROLOGY   INTERESTING FACTS

NUMEROLOGY INTERESTING FACTS

Detailed below are some interesting facts about people and numbers which help to show some of the links Numerology has on our everyday lives.

One interesting fact which comes to light when you start thinking about numbers, is the number of times the number 12 crops up. There are 12 months in the year, accordingly 12 Zodiac signs. There were 12 Disciples, in fact most religious leaders seem to have had 12 main Disciples. There were 12 Knights of the Round Table, 12 Tribes of Israel and so on. The times the number 12 occurs is amazing.

Many people hold firm the belief that numbers matter in their lives. While not directly relating to Numerology, it is interesting to note that two assassinated US Presidents had a numerical connection. "John F. Kennedy" was elected as President of the USA exactly 100 years to the week after "Lincoln". Surprisingly, both had spent 14 years previously as members of congress. There are also several other factors in the lives of these two men which match up, irrespective of the number factor.

Ying Yang Picture  Lucky Numbers  Ying Yang Picture

There are many people who change their name, or the spelling of their names, for the different trend that the numbers can bring about, and many people believe that certain numbers are lucky for them. In England many people think 7 is a lucky number, whereas in many European countries people think 5 is lucky. Who has not heard the phrase "Third Time Lucky", again common to many countries. Many people consider 13 an unlucky number (one explanation being there was 13 at the Last Supper, Jesus and 12 Disciples, and one of those 12 betrayed him). Anyone interested in Tarot will probably have realised that in most tarot packs, in the Major Arcana, the card numbered 13 is Death. The number 13 should not really be considered unlucky but, it certainly is a mystical number.

I would just like to point out before we go any further that Numerology should not be used to work out systems for lotteries, bingo or gambling. In these activities, chance plays a very large part and Numerology does not allow for this.

If you look at all the numbers around you, your birth date, phone number, house number, age etc., there will always seem to be a couple of numbers which appear more often than others. These are the numbers upon which you should focus and which may also be lucky numbers for you.

The link between Astrology and Numerology is strong in as much as each astrological sign has its own planet, which in turn vibrates to its own number. The table below shows how this works out:

1SunLeo
2MoonCancer
3JupiterSagittarius & Pisces
4UranusAquarius
5MercuryGemini & Virgo
6VenusTaurus & Libra
7NeptunePisces
8SaturnCapricorn
9MarsAries & Scorpio

It is therefore not surprising to find that the Zodiac signs also have their own numbers. The table below indicates the ruling planet for each star sign and noting whether the aspect is positive (giving forceful, physical qualities) or negative (with mental qualities). You may also notice that the sign for Cancer is in fact a 6 and a 9 next to each other.

In the Major Arcana section of the Tarot, the cards are numbered from 1 to 22 (mirroring the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet), and it is not a coincidence that this is the case. The link between the two is so immense that those interested in the Tarot would be advised to read "Tarot for Beginners", which explains the relationship in very good detail.

Ying Yang Picture  Generalised Number Definitions  Ying Yang Picture

There are no real set definitions for the meaning of each specific digit. However, some "Common" interpretations include:

1Individual; Aggressor; Self; Leadership Yang
2Balance; Union; Receptive; Partnership Yin
3Creation
4Communication / Interaction
5Action; Restlessness; Life Experience
6Home / Family; Responsibility

Some Numerologists analyse double-digit numbers as well, from 10 to 99. These numbers (ie: 11, 22, 33, ...) are commonly referred to as "Master Numbers" (Buess, 2005). This study of Numerology is based on the evidence of significant double-digit numbers in the Kabbalah, the I-Ching, the Pythagorean Numerology, the Tarot Arcana of the Eastern faiths, and the Runes of the Viking age. Various authors of Numerology books determine various meanings for each number, from 0 to 9 and from 10 to 99.

Ying Yang Picture  The Strange Number 9  Ying Yang Picture

Research into numbers can produce fascinating information. The number 9 is a fascinating number in its own right. If 9 is multiplied by itself, or any other single number, the two figures which result will always equal 9 when added together. You can take this a step further and multiply 9 by any whole number and when the result is reduced (explained later) the answer is always 9. Try it for yourself:

9 x 3 = 27 Therefore 2 + 7 = 9

9 x 6 = 54 Therefore 5 + 4 = 9

9 x 354 = 3186 Therefore 3 + 1 + 8 + 6 = 18
1 + 8 = 9

Likewise, add together all the numbers from 1 through to 9. You get the answer 45, 4 + 5 = 9.

Again, if you look at the multiples of 9 from "1 x 9 = 9" through to "9 x 9 = 81" and add them together, the answer reduces to 9.

If you take a row of any numbers, reverse their order, and take the smallest from the larger, then add all the numbers of the answer together these will always reduce to 9. For example 9432172 - 2712349 = 6719823. Add these together and you get 36, 3 + 6 = 9. This works for any numbers you choose.

There are many more multiplications and patterns which feature the number 9, and no other number is so 'magical'.

John Lennon had a fascination with the number 9, feeling both his past and present were linked to the number. John Lennon was born on the 9th, as was his son Sean; many times he had connections with homes bearing the number 9; the Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, spotted the group in Liverpool on the 9th; and their first recording contract was clinched on the 9th. He met Yoko Ono on a 9th, and it is said he felt convinced that the number 9 was important to him. He went so far as to include the number in several of his songs. It is interesting to note that his time of death, whilst being the 8th in actuality in America was the 9th back in Britain. The hospital at which he was pronounced dead was situated on 9th Avenue, Manhattan.

Many say that the number 9 is in fact the number of "Eternity", because of its indestructibility. Others feel that it is the number of "Visionary".
