The Medicine Buddha Mantra

The Medicine Buddha Mantra

This recitation is a western rendition of the Tibetan Mantra.

It is approved by Yeshe Donden the once physician of the Dalai Lama.

Medicine Buddha is a fully enlightened being that’s devoid of any form of biased against living beings. Like Avalokitesvara or Kuan Yin, the Medicine Buddha is a Buddha filled with unlimited compassion towards us. The Medicine Buddha protects all living beings from attachment; hatred; and ignorance, which Buddhists text indicates are the main cause of illness. But more than that, the Buddha of Medicine also protect us from danger and negative energies or beings.

The 24 Gurus[teachers] in Nature

The 24 Gurus[teachers] in Nature

A Story from the Life of Dattatreya
This is a legend from the life of Dattatreya, the first ‘Acharya’ or teacher, i.e., guru. He is considered a deity who embodies the attributes of the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

A Story from the Dattatreya’s Life

Once, while wandering happily in the forest, Dattatreya met King Yadu, who asked him the secret of his happiness and the name of his guru. He replied, “The Self alone is my guru”.
Yet, I have learned from twenty-four other individuals and objects. So, they, too, are my gurus.” Dattatreya then mentioned the names of his twenty-four Gurus and spoke of the wisdom that he had learned from each: Earth, water, fire, sky, moon, sun, pigeon, python, ocean, moth, honey-gatherers (black bee), bees, elephant, deer, fish, the dancing-girl Pingala, raven, child, maiden, serpent, arrow-maker, spider and beetle.

The core message of Lord Dattatreya is:

“Never judge by surface appearances but always seek a deeper Truth”.

The 24 Gurus Found in Nature

1. The Earth: I learned patience and doing good to others from the earth.

2. The Water: From water, I learned the quality of purity.

3. The Air: I learned from air to be without attachment though I move with many people.

4. The Fire: From fire, I learned to glow with the splendor of Self-knowledge and austerity.

5. The Sky: I learned from the sky that the Self is all-pervading and yet it has no contact with any object.

6. The Moon: I learned from the moon that the Self is always perfect and changeless and it is only the limiting adjuncts that cast shadows over it.

7. The Sun: Just as a sun, reflected in various pots of water, appears as many, so also God or Brahman appears different because of the embodiment caused by the reflection of the mind. This is the lesson I have learned from the sun.

8. The Pigeons: I once saw a pair of pigeons with their young ones. A fowler spread a net and caught the young birds.
The mother pigeon was so attached to her babies that she fell into the net and was caught. From this I have learned that attachment is the root cause of earthly bondage.
9. The Python: The python does not move about for its food. It remains contented with whatever it gets, lying in one place. From this I learned to be contented with whatever I get to eat.

10. The Ocean: Just as the ocean remains unmoved, even though hundreds of rivers flow into it, so also the wise man should remain unmoved amid all the various temptations and troubles.

11. The Moth: To control the sense of sight and to fix the mind on the Self, is the lesson I learned from the moth.

12. The Black Bee: I take a little food from one house and a little from another house and thus appease my hunger. I am not a burden on the householder. This I learned from the black bee which gathers honey from various flowers.

13. The Bees: Bees collect honey with great trouble, but a hunter comes along and takes the honey away easily. From this I learned that it is useless to hoard things.

14. The Elephant: The male elephant, blinded by lust, falls into a pit covered with grass, even at the sight of a female elephant. Therefore, one should destroy lust.

15. The Deer: The deer is enticed and trapped by the hunter through its love of music. Therefore, one should never listen to lewd songs but only devotional music.

16. The Fish: Just as a fish that is covetous of food, falls an easy victim to the bait, so also the man who is greedy for food loses his independence and gets ruined.

17. The Dancing Girl: There was a dancing girl named Pingala. One night, being tired of looking for a client, she had to be content with a sound sleep. I learned from this fallen woman the lesson that the abandonment of hope leads to contentment.

18. The Raven: A raven picked up a piece of flesh. It was pursued and beaten by other birds. It dropped the piece of flesh and attained peace and rest. From this I learned that people undergo all sorts of troubles and miseries when he runs after sensual pleasures and that become as happy as the bird when they abandon them.

19. The Child: The child that drinks mother's milk is free from all cares, worries and anxieties, and is always cheerful. I learned the virtue of cheerfulness from the child.

20. The Maiden: The maiden was husking paddy. Her bangles made much noise and there were people around. To silence the bangles, she removed them one by one. When she had only one, it did not make any noise, and she was happy. I learned from the maiden that living among many can create discord, disturbance, dispute and quarrel. Even between two people there might be unnecessary words or strife. So, the ascetic should remain alone in solitude.

21. The Serpent: A serpent does not build its own hole. It dwells in the holes dug out by others. Even so, an ascetic should not build a home for himself. He should live in a temple or a cave built by others.

22. The Arrow-maker: I learned from the arrow-maker the quality of intense concentration of mind that is required in making an effective lethal weapon.

23. The Spider: The spider pours out of its mouth long threads and weaves them into cobwebs. Sometimes, it gets itself entangled in the net of its own making. Humans too make nets of their own ideas and get entangled in it. The wise man should, therefore, abandon all worldly thoughts and think only of Brahman.

24. The Beetle: The beetle catches a worm, puts it in its nest and stings it. The poor worm, always fearing the return of the beetle and its sting, thinks constantly of the beetle and becomes a beetle itself. I learned from the beetle and the worm to turn myself into the Self by contemplating constantly on It; thus I gave up all attachment to the body and attained Moksha or liberation.

Dattatreya’s enlightening words impressed the king so much that he abandoned the world and led a life of austerity and meditation on the Self.

Difference Between a Wish and Prayer?

You might try to finagle or manipulate to tilt the odds in your favor. You beg with God to move on your behalf. You may just rehearse your wish repeatedly in your conscious mind while trying to prepare your heart for disappointment. If you are like me, you may try a combination of these approaches.

That got me thinking. What is the difference between a prayer and a wish?

Whether big or small, we all have circumstances that weigh on our hearts. Completely out of our control, our souls are consumed with the outcome.

So, when does a desire for a specific outcome turn into a prayer? What keeps it from remaining a wish left to chance – impotent and elusive?

The Bible has some things to say about this…

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
– Philippians 4:6-7

Take delight in the lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.
– Psalm 37:4

Prayer is much easier to talk about than do. Even those of us who realize that it is essential to living a life of purpose, impact and fulfillment struggle with doing it – much like we struggle with any relationship.

RUDRAKSHA: THE DIVINE SEED

What is Rudraksha?

Rudraksha originates from a Sanskrit word. Rudra is a combination of rudra+aksha, symbolising Rudra and Aksha, or the teardrops of Lord Shiva. legend has it that these teardrops fell on earth in the form of the Rudraksha plant. Thus, began the fame of the Rudraksha beads.

Rudraksha, this holy seed has a very special place in Hindu religion because of the belief that it has divine and mystical properties.

Searching for ways to increase their spiritual power and practices, India’s ancient masters were the first to discover Rudraksha, the extraordinary seeds hidden within the brilliant blue fruits of evergreen trees, growing in the volcanic earth of the sacred Himalaya mountains. Researching their miraculous spiritual powers, the masters strung the Rudraksha seeds together and realized that, by wearing them, the Rudraksha amplified, radiated and channeled peace, power and protection against negativity. They also found that Rudraksha provided many divine channels, reflected in their different ‘faces’, called Mukhis, which are seen on the surfaces of each bead.

Today, they are mostly found in Nepal, Burma, Thailand or Indonesia. They are there in some parts of the Western Ghats in South India, but the best quality ones come from a certain altitude in Himalayas because somehow the soil, atmosphere, and everything influences it. These seeds have an unique vibration.

Legends of Rudraksha
There are many stories in Hindu mythology about Rudraksha. References of Rudraksha is found in our Hindu mythology and Vedic scriptures of Shiva Purana, Padma Purana and Shrimad Bhagavatam.
A Favourite of Lord Shiva

Because of its association with Shiva, Rudraksha is said to a favourite of the Lord. But not merely legend, even modern scientific research has proved the power of these beads. It says Rudraksha beads store electromagnetic properties which influence human physiology.

The function of Rudraksha
A. Transformation of sound waves and light waves
The Rudraksha transforms light waves of Deities in the universe into sound waves of the human body and vice versa. As a result, man can absorb waves of Deities and human thoughts can get converted into the language of the Deities.
B. Absorption of sama (Sattva) waves
The Rudraksha absorbs sama (Sattva) waves. Similarly, sama waves are emitted by its crests. A real Rudraksha can be recognized by the vibrations felt upon holding it. At that time, the body absorbs the sama waves emitted by the Rudraksha. If a Rudraksha is held between the thumb and the ring finger, vibrations will be felt anywhere in the body. Even if kept nearby, the effect of a Rudraksha is felt up to half an hour. Thus, during that period we can perceive vibrations even if any other object is held with the fingers. However, if the hands are washed with water, the vibrations cannot be perceived.
C. Rudraksha-mala can be used for chanting the Name of any Deity
Any Deity’s Name can be chanted by holding a Rudraksha.

Benefits
Energetic support -Sometimes when we go to a new place, it can be difficult to fall asleep in a new environment, despite being physically tired. The Rudraksha can help in situations like this by creating a cocoon of your energy and giving you energetic support in an ever-changing world. They are supportive for maintaining physical and mental balance.
Protection – It can be possible for us to absorb negative energy, even if it is not specifically targeted towards us, if we are in a certain area and happen to be sensitive to it. Rudraksha can create an energetic shield to protect against these things.
Quality check – The Rudraksha mala can be used as a tool to check the pranic value of foods, by holding it over certain foods. If the food is of positive pranic value, the mala will begin to spin clockwise, and if negative pranic food, it will spin anti-clockwise.
The spiritual path – Ultimately, the Rudraksha is a good tool and support for those of us who are devoted to the spiritual path, from enhancing intuition, support in meditation, purification of aura, cleansing of chakras, to peace of mind.
The Medicinal Side of Rudraksha

Apart from its spiritual properties, Rudraksha seeds are popular for it medical properties as well. As per Ayurvedic studies Rudraksha has positive effects on heart and nerves. It improves blood circulation, controls stress and anxiety, increases concentration, helps you overcome depression. Rudraksha possess electromagnetic power which in turn energizes cosmic rays and transmits them into the body for a healthy life. Rudraksha has been popular among people with high blood pressure, wearing a Rudraksha mala helps in controlling one's blood pressure.

As per details found in the Purana there are fourteen kinds of Rudraksha, which are called Mukhi or faceted Rudraksha. Mukhi or faces of Rudraksha are deep lines found on the surface of the Rudraksha from bottom to the top hole. The number of these lines decides about the type or Mukhi Rudraksha. For example, if a Rudraksha has three such lines it is called 3 Mukhi or 3 face Rudraksha. Other handwritten Scriptures found with various saints narrate the properties of 1 to 21 Mukhi Rudraksha. It is believed that these beads were available in the ancient time from 1 to 108 Mukhi. Now they have become most rare Natural thing.
